MAYOR CHALLENGES DELEGATES AT WASTE SUMMIT

Delivering a keynote address, City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau, challenged the about 400 delegates representing various organisations in the recycling and renewable sector to find an appropriate word for what is presently called waste. Although 80% of the world’s waste is produced by North America, Western Europe, Japan and South Korea, Africa is still seen as a dirty continent full of litter and poor waste management practices. Rubbish lines the pavements of many African cities as citizens carelessly dump their litter on the streets or overflow landfills without any concern for the future sustainability of the continent.
Amanda Nair, MD of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, Pikitup says, “The problem with Africa is the lack of environmental awareness and appropriate technologies needed for waste management. African municipalities need to establish ownership of the environment among all its citizens. Keeping a city clean can only be done if it has the support and cooperation of everybody who resides within that city.” ... Read More
