Pikitup the waste management company of the City of Johannesburg has paid the outstanding salaries of the contracted EPWP employees who earlier this morning disrupted waste collection services.

Pikitup can confirm that as from this morning, 1596 EPWP have been paid their outstanding salaries for the period 17 December 2019 to 30 January 2020. The delay was occasioned by late submission of the necessary documentation which did not reach the HR department timeously for the January pay run.

Pikitup apologises for the inconvenience caused and reassures residents that as a result of the payments, employees from the various depots are on route to service today’s scheduled waste collection areas. Urgent contingency measures to clean the city have been put in place to ensure that the city retains the highest cleanliness levels possible.

Pikitup condemns the actions of contracted EPWP workers who earlier this morning trashed some of the areas to voice their disgruntlement. We appeal to them for constructive engagement without trashing the city.

Both Pikitup and the City of Johannesburg have stringent quality assurance and controls in place and it was necessary that the payments were done following due process.
