Pikitup and Rosebank Killarney Gazette helped Les Scherf, a seven year old from Fourways, to clean up Zoo Lake on Sunday 19 July 2009. The youngster first indicated his interest in cleaning the park when, on one of his family’s regular visits, he spotted an area that had been used as a dumping spot for beer bottles and cans. He and his older sister Sabrina along with children from three other schools participated at the clean up with assistance from Pikitup.
Pikitup, as the city’s integrated waste management company, is responsible for collecting waste from litter receptacles but has often partnered with City Parks to clean up unsightly illegal dumping spots in or near parks. City Parks manages parks, cemeteries, street trees and public green areas in the City. “In order to maintain and enhance the cleanliness of the City and its parks, we need to change the mindsets of residents towards litter and illegal dumping,” says Pansy Jali Acting Communications Manager for Pikitup. “Les is proving that everyone can make a difference if they really want to”.
Children from Laeskool Jan Celliers, Blue Bird Nursery and St. Katherines were only too eager to help young Les who attends Ridge School. Usually rivals on the sporting fields and in the debating classes, these children stood united against litter on Sunday. 20/07/2009
