The call to clean up some of Johannesburg’s most visible dirty spots prior to the commencement of the Confederations Cup has been answered particularly enthusiastically by some of Johannesburg’s most prolific print and broadcast media. “The support we have received from the media has been fantastic”, commented Roelf de Beer, Pikitup Marketing Manager. “We are appealing to the public to respond to the call from their favourite media and get involved with their respective activities on the day.” Some of the sites identified by the media include the Mary Fitzgerald Square and surrounds by YFM, whilst Jozie FM will be cleaning the Joubert Park area. Other sites identified by radio stations include the Hector Pieterson Memorial, which will be cleaned by the staff, management and listenership of 702 Talk Radio, whilst 94.7 Highveld Stereo have pledged to clean up a shopping centre in Diepsloot. Joburg’s biggest newspaper names have also pledged their support with the Daily Sun to clean the Baragwanath Taxi Rank, The Citizen to clean the Walter Sisulu Square and a host of the Caxton and Urban newspapers having identified sites within their respective distribution footprints. “We’re hoping that as the day nears, we will have heard from even more media concerns who wish to mobilize their staff and readers/listeners to identify their own clean-up site or adopt one of those sites that we have already identified and that are displayed our website www.pikitup.co.za.” The deadline for media, corporates and other associations to register will be Wednesday 3 June. Pikitup will provide the relevant logistical support to media, businesses and other organizations who wish to participate, through the provision of resources such as refuse bags and bins.
Any media corporates, associations, clubs etc wanting to participate can register on the Pikitup website (www.pikitup.co.za) or call 011 712 5200 01/06/2009
