As part of commemorating World Environmental Day on June 5, Pikitup’s Avalon Depot will be hosting a mini-march with the theme. “Stop illegal dumping for the health of our kids” on the day.
Residents of Eldorado Park, Freedom Park and Kliptown will be joining the members of the Avalon depot in the south of Johannesburg, to intensify their fight against illegal dumping in their communities. Adding their voices and support to the march will be SAPS, JMPD and Emergency Services (EMS) from the Freedom Park area.
The Avalon depot services some of the areas that have been the hardest hit by the scourge of illegal dumping, resulting in this depot alone clearing over 48 000 tons of illegal refuse between July last year and April 2007. This translates to a cost of almost R9,6 million. Faced with this challenge, the depot established environmental forums which operate in all three residential areas that will be participating in the march.
“The march forms part of an education and awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the problem of illegal dumping in our communities and encourages communities to take charge of their environment,” said Mapitso Muambadzi, Avalon’s Environmental Officer.
This march follows on the footsteps of the newly - formed task team formed to combat illegal dumping in the Johannesburg CBD, a joint effort by Pikitup, JMPD and the Gauteng Health Department.
