PIKITUP, JOSHCO and the Community of Bella Vista joined forces from the 21st – 24th September 2005 to launch a massive clean up campaign in 12 sections, in Bella Vista. Communities were divided into groups of more than 10 to clean up the area. The clean up followed a short presentation by PIKITUP on the 20th September 2005.
Bella Vista is a township which is serviced from Region 9 (Southdale depot). There is a high rate of unemployment and poverty in the area. On the final day of the campaign stakeholders from different organizations attended the function, and amongst the stakeholders were representatives from PIKITUP Environmental Management Department), Josie Van Staden – Ward Councilor, Morgan Van Staden from Yo –TV, Fazel Areff – General Manager of Housing Services, Mr. Jwili- acting CEO of Joshco, Staff members of Joshco and Community of Bella Vista.
The different stakeholders were give opportunity to present a topic on Environmental issues and they all congratulated the community of Bella Vista for the decent job that they have done. Speakers after speakers based emphasis on the sustainability of all the cleaned areas. The Community of Bella Vista committed themselves to ensuring that no dumping would take place on the cleaned areas. Continuous clean up campaigns will be held once a month until people understand the concept, then it will be done once every two months.
