On 05 June 2010, thousands of residents took part in Pikitup’s Clean Up Day which was aimed at creating massive awareness and action around solving the problem of litter and illegal dumping in Johannesburg. Pikitup credits the success of the initiative to the strong partnerships that were formed in order to reach all corners of the City. “We would like to give a special thank you to all our media partners, sponsors and organisations that pitched in for enabling us to meet our objectives,” says Zami Nkosi, Managing Director of Pikitup.
SABC 1, SABC 2, e.tv, YFM, Jozi FM, Sowetan, The Citizen, Caxton community newspapers, Urban community newspapers, Eldos FM, Radio Islam, UniPress International, The Star and Channel Africa all played a pivotal role in educating the public and mobilizing them to significantly enhance the cleanliness of Johannesburg. Sophie Ndaba, Penny Lebyane, Marks Maponyane and Nothemba Madumo also worked tirelessly towards the success of the initiative.
