Clean Up Day Introduction
Pikitup is embarking on an ambitious campaign aimed at enhancing the cleanliness of the city ahead of the Confederations Cup, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and beyond. The campaign will kick off with a project called Pikitup Day on 06 June, when the public with the assistance of Pikitup will be invited to clean up the streets and recreation areas of Johannesburg’s towns and suburbs’. Pikitup’s aim is to clean up some of the most prominent ‘dirty spots’ in Johannesburg that may be encountered by tourists and the global media during the aforementioned major sporting events when the City will be in the world spotlight. The overarching goal of the campaign is to change the mindsets and attitudes of residents towards littering and illegal dumping permanently.
Through the Clean City campaign Pikitup will engage with Johannesburg residents with one objective in mind, to create awareness of the fact that the cleanliness of the city is the responsibility of both the City and its residents and that it will only succeed if everyone works together.
The campaign’s theme, “Pitch in and we’ll Pikitup” is a clear message to residents to play a part in keeping the city clean and is also indicative of the underlying issue at hand, that Pikitup is mandated to collect refuse from receptacles and not necessarily to clean litter thrown on the ground or illegally dumped by residents. By simply doing the right thing and putting waste in the provided litter receptacles, residents will be contributing significantly towards Pikitup’s efforts of creating a clean city that everyone can be proud
