Clean City Summit Suggestions |
Pikitup launched a red card initiative at the Clean City Summit on 09 September as part of its illegal dumping campaign. The initiative will be rolled out to the public at major intersections in the next few weeks. “Although it has an element of fun attached to it, the red card has a serious purpose,” said Thabiso Taaka, Chief Operating Officer. “We want people to use it to both to discourage littering and illegal dumping as well as to report these criminal offences as the call center number is printed on it”.

The initiative, aimed at eliminating illegal dumping ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, uses a soccer analogy to get its message across. “What we hope to achieve from a marketing point of view, is to empower people to become “referees” of the environment,” adds Taaka. “We want people to take ownership, to have pride and revel in the reality of a Clean City and Clean Game next year.
Importantly, both the taxi industry and the informal traders will be included in the roll-out of the illegal dumping campaign.
