Media - Mayor Launches Clean City Summit

Executive Mayor, Amos Masondo, will host the inaugural Clean City Summit on 09 September 2009 at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg. The Summit is aimed at enhancing the cleanliness of the city through meaningful and participative discourse. It will feature influential speakers such as Geoff Rothschild of the JSE, Wesbank green-building architect Kim Fairbairn, and Ike Ndlovu representing FIFA.

“The Clean City Summit is designed to bring together stakeholders of the City of Johannesburg with one objective in mind – to enhance and maintain the cleanliness of the City ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and beyond,” says Thabiso Taaka Chief Operating Officer of Pikitup. The Summit follows a successful Clean Up Day campaign on 06 June 2009 and is a practical platform for business, education, government, NGOs and residents to discuss solutions to the problem of litter and illegal dumping in the City.

Topics will range from environmental awareness and education to the designing of environmentally-friendly energy saving buildings, with speakers emphasizing methods and approaches that can be taken to ensure a clean city. “The speakers have been chosen because of their experience and knowledge in specific environment matters, however, we need residents and business to make their input as well,” adds Taaka. The Summit is a Pikitup initiative which will expose the citizens of the City of Johannesburg and other cities in South Africa to international trends in best practices and trends.

The Summit will be used as a launch pad for a number of strategic initiatives including an illegal dumping campaign, the Eco Rangers initiative and a prestigious Award for champions of the environment.

As there are limited seats, entry into the Summit is by invite only with a few invitations available on a first come first served basis via website registration. All interested parties can obtain more information, including podcasts of the speeches, through the Pikitup website, “A Cleaner Joburg” Facebook group and local media.
