Pikitup is launching its pilot recycling project in some of the north-western suburbs and informal settlements serviced by the Waterval Depot. This project’s primary objective entails separating recyclables at home. It is being implemented in partnership with Mondi Recycling. This is a six- to eight-month pilot project that will herald a whole new way of thinking and lifestyle changes to those households and businesses serviced by the Waterval Depot. Johannesburg’s landfill sites are experiencing strain with the amount of refuse generated by the city’s citizens. By separating the recyclables at the source – your home – you will not only be extending the lifespan of our landfill sites but you will be contributing directly to saving our environment.
The roll-out commences on 07 September in the participating suburbs whose refuse collection day falls on the Monday. The following week, the roll out will continue into the participating suburbs whose refuse collection day is on Tuesdays and so on.
The roll-out phase to the targeted 57 000 households will take place over a period of four to eight weeks during which residents in the participating suburbs will receive three additional items:
• an additional black bin with a green lid for garden waste
• a clear bag for recyclable waste, and
• an orange bag for paper and cardboard.
Residents will be required to sign for the additional litter receptacles, however there is no cost involved.
Pikitup has employed and trained local youth to visit residents and educate them about the Separation at Source pilot project in the weeks preceding the roll-out. These Pikitup community education representatives will explain the Separation at Source pilot project in detail and answer any questions that residents may have.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the pilot project which will inform Pikitup on the best way to roll out Separation at Source throughout the City. It may also indicate practical ways of incorporating the informal traders into the broader recycling business.
The refuse collection day will remain constant, coinciding with the current refuse collection schedule.
