This is a new co-production programme by the City of Johannesburg. Jozi@Work is a programme with work packages valued at just over R1 billion. The programme is designed to create an opportunity for communities to partner with the City, in the delivery of municipal services in their own neighbourhoods. It is also aimed at shifting mind-sets by turning job seekers into job creators. This is in a bid to aid socio-economic transformation that will reduce poverty, inequality and unemployment in the seven regions across the City. Members of cooperatives and other community-based entities, have started work after being awarded contracts to do street sweeping, waste separation and clearing of illegal dump sites, among others.
Objective of Programme: Confronting and changing the local reality of poverty, inequality and unemployment. Approaches to providing services and improving conditions co-designed with communities. Developmental partnership which directly build capabilities in the form of local agents who can build local economies. Programme description: Promotion of Active Citizenship through enabling all communities to play a significant role in preserving and protecting the environment
