24 MARCH 2016- 15h30 UPDATE ON THE PIKITUP CONTINGENCY PLAN

RecycleUPDATE ON THE PIKITUP CONTINGENCY PLAN

PIKITUP, the City of Joburg’s waste management entity, continues to work hard in ensuring the collection of waste during the disruption of services and wishes to thank the residents and business owners for their patience and cooperation during this period.

The Round Collected Refuse (RCR) undertaken over the week achieved degrees of success at all depots within the City of Johannesburg. The total percentage of contingency across the city is estimated at 56% success, our challenge still remains clearing of illegally dumped waste and street sweeping/litter picking. The services of the third party contractors are assisting the company to heighten the service delivery programme to ensure that refuse is collected from the households and businesses across the City of Johannesburg. We therefore appeal to communities to work with us in order to ensure the safety of these third party contractors by contacting the JMPD’s Emergency Call Centre on 011 758 9620, when there are acts of intimidation. We further appeal to Community Policing Forums and Neighbourhood Watch Organisations to work with us to safeguard life, plant and equipment deployed in the various neighbourhoods.

Where possible, residents are encouraged to drop off their waste at their nearest garden refuse sites or the landfill sites. We also urge all residents of the City to become active participants in preserving and protecting the environment by applying the basic principles of waste management in order to reduce the amounts of waste generated.

It is our collective responsibility as Johannesburg’s citizens to ensure that good waste management practices are still adhered to, especially now as we approach the Easter period, in order to keep our City clean. We will continue to keep the Joburg community updated through the website, social media, local media and other communication channels, and we again apologise for the disruption being caused by the strike action.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to contact their Councillors and the City’s Regional offices to pick up refuse bags to use for their excess waste. All complaints regarding refuse collection and other related queries and suggestions can be directed to the Call Centre on: 0860562874.
