PIKITUP REINTRODUCES DAY SHIFT IN SOWETO AND EAST OF JOHANNESBURG
PIKITUP, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity is reintroducing day shifts in areas serviced mainly by our Avalon, Central Camp, and Zondi Depots in Soweto and Norwood Depot in the East of Johannesburg, with immediate effect.
This intervention is aimed at alleviating pressure and to deal with the backlogs in densely populated areas which generates high volumes of waste and have proven a challenge to service at night as per the other areas. Plans are afoot to reintroduce dayshift services in other regions of the City. However, contingency refuse collection crews are continuing to work until late at night to remove refuse from households.
Pikitup continues to work hard in ensuring the collection of waste during this period around the City. We, therefore urge members of the community and business owners to collectively work with us during this period by continuing to drop off waste at the nearest Pikitup garden or landfill sites, respectively.
Pikitup is grateful for the unwavering support from communities and we shall continue working together in keeping our city clean, we also urge other communities across the City of Joburg to call a 24 hour hotline, 011 286 6009 to request cleaning tools, gloves and bags for community led clean ups and removal of bagged waste by Pikitup.
We will continue to keep the Joburg community updated through the website, social media, local media and other communication channels, and we again apologise for the disruption being caused by the strike action.
Meanwhile, the disciplinary process relating to the Pikitup workers got-off to a slow start with the Union playing delaying tactics geared to frustrate the process. This resulted in the Union withdrawing entirely from a legitimate process. However, the presiding officer will continue with the hearings in their absence. Pikitup will lead its evidence and close its case, whereupon the presiding officer will reserve judgement and provide his findings a few days later.
